With Australia committed to leading a joint civilian-military intervention force in the Solomon Islands, recent Pacific peacekeeping operations give a useful taste of what outcomes can be expected. This study examines civil-military relations of the Truce and Peace Monitoring Groups on Bougainville, an operation that appears to have brought lasting peace to the Solomon Islands' closest neighbour. Individual civil-military interaction on Bougainville was greatly facilitated by effective pre-deployment team-building training and a communal operational focus. Such lessons learned from the TMG/PMG are essential if future multi-agency interventions are to succeed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
