A 15-year survey of stars in our galactic neighborhood shows a lot more stellar mixing than expected, says Brigitta Nordstr& ouml; m (Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen), who led the study, which involved over 1,000 nights' observations. The survey showed that many stars near the Sun are transitory, passing by on the way to someplace else. The Sun lies in the outer portion of one of the galaxy's arms, about 26,000 light-years from its center. An animation tracing solar movements backward 250 million years (about one galactic orbit) shows the Sun's present-day neighbors once scattered throughout a quarter of the galaxy.
