Abstract Hollow sulfides nanoparticles of MoS 2 , Cr 2 S 3 and Mo 0.9 Cr 0.1 S 2 ("inorganic fullerenes") were prepared from SrMo(Cr)O 4 precursors by means of a topotactic solid-gas reaction with H 2 S/CCl 4 mixture. The obtained hollow sulfide nanoparticles have narrow size distributions and high specific surface areas. In the Mo-Cr doped sulfide material, chromium is homogeneously distributed substituting molybdenum within the MoS 2 layers. While Cr 2 S 3 hollow particles are inefficient as lubricant additive, introduction of chromium into MoS 2 improves the tribological properties of the "inorganic fullerene" material. Highlights • New approach developed to prepare morphology-controlled nanoparticles of mixed sulfides. • Cr-doped MoS 2 "inorganic fullerene" first prepared by a solid-gas topotactic reaction. • In Cr-doped MoS 2 hollow nanoparticles Cr is homogeneously dissolved in the MoS 2 slabs. • Cr increases defectness of MoS 2 layers and improves tribological performance.
