In this article, the author wants to propose a critical presentation of the figure of Martin Luther and of some points of his theology, included in the background of his history, in order to see if even today the figure of Luther can say something to society. In the first paragraph he highlights how the direct or indirect sources that refer to Luther do not alone give the possibility of a broad understanding of this person's character, but always a partial one. To understand him it is necessary to bear in mind also the historical situation in which both the works of Luther and his biographies have been written. Starting from this premise, the following three paragraphs seek to see whether it is possible to present the theological bases of Luther's thought in reference to three themes: freedom, Trinity and suffering. In the concluding paragraph he states that for the contemporary world it is not as important to Luther as what he has said about the Jews, the Turks, the pope or other concrete things of his time; Luther can be considered as an existential example, as a human being, who, in his understanding of life before God, draws for us a model for our very existence from God; an existence that each one is called to live in one's own responsibility.
