This article contends that whatever happens elsewhere, the bonds forged between America and France during World War II are enduring. Shaded by pine and elm trees, the manicured lawns and 9,386 graves of the Normandy American Cemetery perch on the cliff-top above Omaha Beach. As the 60th anniversary celebrations of the D-Day landings approach on June 6th, deep political Franco-American differences remain. In the fall-out between George Bush and Jacques Chirac a year ago, French-bashing in America turned harsh. For those organising the ceremony--to be attended by Mr Bush, Russia's Vladimir Putin, Britain's Queen Elizabeth and, for the first time, Germany's chancellor, Gerhard Schr& ouml; der--this could spell trouble. Besides the main ceremony, there will be hundreds of events across Normandy, including 67 badge ceremonies for American veterans.
