Our contemporary> world is characterised by the sheer spectacle of mobility and endless leaving of people for other places--either willed or forced. People leave their native place to work, see other places or are forced to flee due to social unrest, discrimination and war. Leaving necessitates forgetting, in some ways, as people try to start a new life or leave behind their past. However, living in a new place does not mean a total break from the past or a complete forgetting of affinities and connections, foremost of which is one s emotive and primordial 'membership ' to his/her place of origin. People therefore while adapting to their new place of residence also find ways to consecrate their remembrance of their 'old'place. In the case of the people of Mauban who live in the US, they constantly signal their membership to their hometown by means of the ludic experience of food and language. In social activities like their commemoration of town fiesta, they share native food and speak words known only to Maubanin, their ways of connecting to their past, their remembering of their place in this world of seeming placelessness and unfettered leaving and coming. This, amongst other things, also signals our complex understanding and experiencing of place in this day and age of globalisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
