This paper narrates the condition of Tondo Women after the Second World War (1946) and prior to the declaration of Martial Law. It is a women's history woven into the history of the place. It is the story of women who originally came from Tondo together with migrant women who settled in the place and claimed Tondo as their own homeland. It is an account of their collective memories on how they got back their lives after the war, during which time the internal migration of women was also at its highest. The women of Tondo, together with the newly arrived migrants found themselves living together and bearing the brunt of poverty while saddled with issues and problems related to their gender. The study exposes the lived experiences, the voices and mentalities of urban poor women who suffered from lack of economic and educational opportunities, housing problems and adequate social services, relational problems with their spouses, double burden, double standard, domestic violence, and reproductive health problems. It also documents the reactions of women to their sad plight, from that of the position of acceptance, to coping up, and actual resistance to their problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
