This article discusses the tools that Australia is using to combat the effects of drought. According to the author, Australia is the driest inhabited continent in terms of streamflow and rainfall. He argues that it is particularly susceptible to climate change because it is surrounded by oceans and more affected by El-Nino Southern Oscillation variation. He cautions that areas of the southeast where most people live are getting hotter and drier. Government agencies have created real time monitoring networks of reservoir levels, soil moisture, salinity and streamflow. Desalinization is being researched and aquifers are being used to disinfect wastewater.
